Balance and Coordination

Balance and Coordination

Balance and coordination exercises aim to improve a child’s ability to control movement, maintain stability, and enhance awareness of body position (proprioception). These activities help children develop the motor skills necessary for daily tasks, play, and overall physical function.

  • Balance: Balance refers to the body’s ability to maintain control over its center of gravity within the base of support (BOS). Proper balance relies on sensory input from the vestibular (inner ear), visual, and proprioceptive systems, all processed by the cerebellum in the brain. When these systems are not functioning optimally, it can lead to balance issues that increase the risk of falls and affect the ability to perform activities of daily living (ADLs).
    • Balance Training: Exercises that focus on static and dynamic balance help children develop the strength and control needed to maintain stability during activities such as standing, walking, or running. Balance training is especially important for children with neurological or musculoskeletal conditions that may impair their ability to maintain stability.
  • Coordination: Coordination involves the ability to perform smooth, controlled, and accurate movements. Activities designed to improve coordination help children develop better gross motor skills (e.g., walking, jumping) and fine motor skills (e.g., writing, manipulating objects).

By incorporating balance and coordination exercises into pediatric physiotherapy, children can improve their movement control, stability, and confidence, leading to greater independence and a reduced risk of falls.
