Modification of the Environment

Modification of the Environment

Occupational Therapists work closely with clients to modify their environment, making it safer and more accessible. These changes are especially important for individuals with mobility difficulties or sensory differences. Common environmental modifications include:

  • Toileting equipment: Installing grab bars, and adapted toilet seats to support a child participate more independently in toileting.
  • Lighting Adjustments: Improving lighting in dim areas can help clients with visual impairments or those who need better illumination for safety.
  • Decluttering: Removing obstacles like furniture or clutter from stairs, hallways, and pathways ensures smoother movement, reducing the risk of tripping or falling.
  • Decluttering the visual environment: Advising teachers how they can adapt the visual stimuli in the classroom to support children who are overwhelmed with too much visual stimuli.
  • Developing spaces within the child’s setting to support their sensory needs.
  • Supporting school staff include sensory tools in the environment to support the child’s needs.

By tailoring a client’s environment to their needs, OTs help increase well-being and overall participation in their day-to-day lives.
