Some occupational therapists are trained in the SOS approach to feeding.
The Sequential Oral Sensory (SOS) Approach to Feeding is a comprehensive, research-based program designed to help children who experience challenges with eating, including picky or restrictive eating. Unlike traditional approaches that often focus solely on the act of eating, SOS takes a holistic view of feeding by addressing the sensory, motor, oral, and behavioral aspects of a child’s eating experience.

For children who are restrictive eaters—often due to sensory sensitivities, anxiety around new foods, or difficulty with oral motor skills—the SOS approach offers a gradual, non-pressured path toward expanding their diet. Occupational therapists (OTs) who are trained in the SOS Approach support children by breaking down the feeding process into manageable steps, starting with the sensory exploration of food (such as seeing, smelling, and touching food) and progressing to tasting and eating at a pace that is comfortable for the child.
OTs using the SOS Approach focus on creating a positive and stress-free eating environment. They work closely with the child and their family to identify and reduce mealtime challenges, build trust with food, and encourage the child’s curiosity and engagement with new foods. By incorporating sensory play and exploring food in a fun, non-threatening way, OTs help children gradually overcome restrictive eating patterns and learn to enjoy a greater variety of foods.
The goal is always to support the child’s unique needs, without forcing or pressuring them, and to create positive mealtime experiences that build confidence and comfort around food.
