This is the most common form of incontinence and occurs during physical strain, such as laughing, sneezing, or exercising. The pelvic floor muscles and ligaments support organs like the bladder, and poor control or weak muscles can lead to stress leakage. Factors such as constipation, reduced fitness (leading to decreased muscle bulk), persistent coughing, surgery, or being overweight can exacerbate this condition.
Urgency refers to a sudden, intense desire to urinate immediately, even if your bladder isn’t completely full. If you leak on the way to the toilet, it’s called urge incontinence. This can be due to hyperactivity of your bladder muscles and weak pelvic floor muscles. Consuming caffeine and fizzy drinks, or not drinking enough fluids throughout the day, can worsen your symptoms.
Mixed incontinence is a combination of both urgency and stress incontinence. Our physiotherapist will help identify the cause of your incontinence and develop a treatment plan tailored specifically for you.
